Structure of Atom

The term “atom” is derived from the Greek word a-tomio, which means uncuttable” or “non-divisible. Since the time of early Indian and Greek philosophers (400 B.C.), who believed that atoms were the fundamental building blocks of matter, the existence of atoms has been proposed. Further subdivision of matter would result in atom and the atom cannot be divided further.
In 1808, John Dalton, a British school teacher, proposed the atomic theory of matter on a firm scientific basis. Dalton’s atomic theory was his theory.
Thomson’s Model of Atom
It is also referred to as the watermelon model or the plum pudding model. The atom, according to this model, is a positive sphere with negative charges distributed throughout.
Rutherford Alpha Scattering Experiment
Gold foil experiment was carried out in order to better understand the structure of an atom. According to this model, the majority of an atom is empty, and each atom consists of a heavy positively charged nucleus.
Bohr’s Model of Atom
Electrons revolve around the nucleus in orbits that have set sizes and energy. The smallest orbit has the lowest energy and the radiation can either be absorbed or emitted.
Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle
According to the uncertainty principle, we cannot measure the particle’s position and momentum with absolute precision.
Bohr–Sommerfield Model
The path of an electron around the nucleus, according to this model, is an ellipse with the nucleus at one of its foci. An electron’s angular momentum in a closed elliptical path is also quantised.
Sub-Atomic Particles
Dalton’s atomic theory was very successful in explaining the laws of conservation of mass, constant composition, and multiple proportions. However, it failed to explain the results of many experiments. For example, it was known that substances such as glass or ebonite generate electricity when rubbed with silk or fur.
