Diversity in the Living World
Each type of plant, animal, or organism you see represents a species. The number of known and described species ranges between 1.7 and 1.8 million. This term refers to biodiversity or the number and variety of organisms found on Earth. There are three types of Nomenclature -:
- Binomial nomenclature
- Polynomial nomenclature
- Trinomial nomenclature
it is the process of giving scientific names to the organisms. Plant and animal scientific names will be assigned separately by ICBN and ICZN. The scientific name is divided into two parts: the generic name and the specific epithet. Carolus Linnaeus developed this method of providing names with two components, which he called Binomial Nomenclature.
Rules of Nomenclature
- Each name has two components – the Generic name and the specific epithet.
- Plants cannot have generic and specific names that are the same, but it is acceptable for animals.
