Human Health & Diseases
Health is a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, not simply the absence of disease or infirmity. The disease is defined as any change from the normal state that causes discomfort or disability that affects health.
Types of Diseases
Diseases can be classified into two types
- Congenital Diseases
Genetic defects are present from birth. This could be due to a gene mutation, a chromosomal abnormality, or environmental factors. Defects in the chromosomes and genes are passed down to the next generation. - Acquired Diseases
Diseases acquired throughout a person’s life are called Acquired disease. This inlcudes -: - Infectious or communicable disease
- Deficiency disease
- Non-communicable disease
- Allergies
Transmission of Diseases
Diseases are transmitted from infection reservoirs to healthy people in two ways: direct and indirect transmission.
Direct transmission
Some pathogens enter the human body directly, without the use of intermediate agents. This can happen as shown below.
- Contact with Infected Persons
Certain diseases cause skin sores or lesions. Infection occurs when materials discharged from these sores or lesions come into contact with the skin. Direct contact spreads ringworm, athlete’s foot, barber’s itch, chickenpox, smallpox, syphilis, and gonorrhoea. - Droplet Infection
Some diseases can be contracted simply by being in a confined space with an infected person. Coughing, sneezing, spitting, or even talking causes the latter to expel tiny droplets of mucus. Pathogens dislodged from the nasal membrane, throat, and lungs may be present in these droplets. A large number of these droplets are inhaled. Droplets spread diphtheria, scarlet fever, influenza, the common cold, measles, mumps, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and whooping cough. - Contact with Soil
The bacteria that cause tetanus and blood poisoning enter the human body through wounds in the soil. - Animal Bites
The virus of rabies, or hydrophobia, is transmitted through wounds caused by rabid animal bites, most commonly dogs. - Through Placenta
Due to age or injury, the placenta becomes permeable to pathogens such as the German measles virus and syphilis bacteria in the later stages of pregnancy. Pathogens then migrate from the maternal blood to the foetal blood.
