How to Prepare Kinematics for NEET 2022?

Kinematics is a class 11 physics important topic for NEET. Every year three to four questions are asked from Kinematics. In NEET 2021, there were questions worth 16 marks from Kinematics.

Though the concept of motion and its properties are not complicated, the majority of students fail to solve numerical based on Kinematics. Some of them don’t know how to start or from where to start, some are unable to identify the variables, some of them are unable to memorize the formulae, some are not capable of interpreting the question and some others get stuck in the algebra.

To overcome these difficulties, you should have a clear idea about- what are the subtopics, where to emphasize, and how to learn and memorize.

Important subtopics in Class 11 Kinematics

The topic Kinematics covers the two chapters in your NCERT textbook. They are motion in a straight line and Motion in a plane.

The first step of learning any topic, especially in Science, is understanding the concept. You can’t mug up science.

Start from the basic aspects of motion. They are position, distance, displacement, velocity, acceleration, etc.

Then you have to differentiate and learn the different types of motion like accelerated motion, rectilinear motion, relative motion, uniform circular motion, and projectile motion.

This is important since the way of approach is different in each type of motion. The next task is to identify and understand specific terms like freefall, retardation, frame of reference, instantaneous values, and average values, and relative quantities.

The next important point is to compare and learn some quantities like distance and displacement, velocity and acceleration, etc. You should have the knowledge to interpret how the change in one of them would affect the other.

Then comes the most important part, the equations of motion. First, understand how they are derived and what are the conditions applied. Then, learn to identify the quantities which are represented by different variables.

Compare and learn the equations in 1-D and 2-D motion. The equations of motion in 2-D are just extended versions of that in 1-D. They are given in vector form, you can resolve them and treat them as separate 1-D motion and solve. And finally, combine them according to the laws of vector addition. This can be done in the case of projectile motion. 

In the case of circular motion, you have to learn the equivalent quantities in linear and circular motions, learn how they are related, and then learn the equations of motion.

How to solve numerical problems in Class 11 Physics Kinematics?

Step 1 – When you are given a numerical problem, the first thing you have to do is to identify the type of motion included in the question. And then treat it accordingly. 

Step 2 – The next step is to strategize your solving method.

Step 3 – As the first step, write down the given quantities.

Step 4 – Identify and write the unknown quantity.

Step 5 – Next, select the equation connecting the known and unknown variables.

Step 6 – Substitute the values in the equation.

Step 7 – Finally, solve for the unknown variable.

While solving a numerical problem, there are a number of things you have to be careful about. First among them is to have a pictorial representation of the given situation. It will help you to have a better understanding of the problem and to identify the variables, signs, etc. Before starting the calculations, you should make the necessary unit conversions. Also, you should understand the meaning of each variable mentioned in the problem correctly.

Another important thing is the signs of the physical quantities. For example, when a ball is thrown upward, its acceleration will be -g, and if the velocity is decreasing it will be a retarded motion and the acceleration will be negative. Hence according to the direction of motion or the change in the values of the quantities, the signs also will change.

The next thing is the calculations in different types of motion. The way of calculation is different for instantaneous and average quantities. We compare and calculate the quantities relative to each other in relative motion. In free fall, the acceleration’s value is a constant, which is the acceleration due to gravity. In projectile motion, we treat the motions in X and Y directions independently.

Ability to interpret the question is very important in solving kinematics numerical. You should be able to understand and assume some quantities from the question, which are not mentioned directly.  For example, if the question states “An object starts from rest (or initially at rest)”, it is to be understood that the initial velocity is zero.

Drawing and interpreting graphs is a crucial part of Kinematics. Given the quantities, you should be able to draw the graphs and analyze them. If the question is based on a given graph, you should be capable of analyzing and interpreting it.
